10 Dental Implant Surgery Aftercare Tips

10 Dental Implant Surgery Aftercare Tips

Successful dental implant surgery depends on how well you take care of your mouth (and your body) during the recovery process. Here are some amazing dental implant aftercare tips.

Here are 10 tips to follow after you have undergone dental implant surgery:

  1. You will be given post-surgery instructions before you undergo your surgery. If you have any concerns or questions, you can ask them before your procedure. If afterwards you are still unsure or are concerned, get in contact with your dentist as they are the best person to advise you.
  2. Successful healing largely depends on keeping your mouth as clean and bacteria free as possible. Avoid the surgical area when brushing but use your toothbrush to clean your teeth as you normally would. Rinse after meals with warm salt water which will kill bacteria and aid in the healing process.
  3. The anaesthetic should take a few hours to wear off after surgery. However, it is strongly recommended that you have support in getting home from another person. You should not drive after having anaesthesia so will need somebody to fetch you from the hospital. Plans should be made for this ahead of surgery.
  4. Try to avoid strenuous exercise for at least two days after the surgery. In order for your surgical wound to heal, your body should not be put under any stress.
  5. The surgical wound will heal faster if it is left alone. As tempting as it may be, try to avoid disturbing the area with your fingers or tongue. If there is excessive bleeding, this can be controlled by using a gauze pad to apply slight pressure to the area until the bleeding has stopped.
  6. If you are a smoker, it would be wise to try and avoid smoking until the wound has healed. Smoking limits healing and slows down your recovery time.
  7. Think about your diet for the first days after surgery. Avoid hot foods and drinks as this can cause damage to the surgical area. Soft foods are ideal for the first couple of days.
  8. It is possible that you may experience some swelling and/or bruising a few days after the surgery. While this may subside after a few days, swelling can be reduced with ice packs wrapped in a towel.
  9. Any pain you experience after surgery should be managed with pain relief. The pain should wear off after the second or third day and you should start to feel it once the local anaesthetic has worn off. If you are experiencing extreme pain, your dentist may be able to prescribe you something stronger which will ease your recovery.
  10. If you were prescribed a course of antibiotics after the surgery, be sure to complete it to prevent any infections.
