Dental emergencies include cracked and broken teeth, as well as tooth loss and severe pain that cannot be relieved with over-the-counter medication. With the current lockdown in New South Wales, you may have had to postpone certain dental procedures. Although this is an inconvenience, the health and safety of our staff and patients remains a priority. Throughout the current Covid-19 lockdown in the Greater Sydney area, the team at Hyde Park Dental Care will be available for dental emergencies. Read on to find out which dental services are available, and if you are a candidate for treatment… What is a dental emergency? A dental emergency is a dental problem that requires immediate treatment to alleviate severe pain or to save a tooth. Some of the most common dental emergencies include infection, abscess, cracked or broken teeth, and knocked out teeth. If you experience any of these issues, it is advisable that you seek immediate dental treatment. By seeing your dentist as soon as possible, you may be able to prevent further damage, resolve any pain that you feel, and save your damaged tooth from extraction. What emergency services are available? Although not all dental services are available during the current COVID-19 lockdown, the good news is that there are several emergency dental services on offer. If you have been in an accident and your tooth has fallen out, try to see your dentist within half an hour if possible. Other emergencies include loose or lost dental fillings or crowns; treatment of dental infections and abscesses; and treatment of soft tissue injuries. What should you do in an emergency? If you have a dental emergency, you should call your dentist as soon as possible. Even if you have an issue after hours, you can ring our work landline which will be diverted to our mobile. Hyde Park Dental Care will arrange to fit you in for an appointment as soon as possible. They will also let you know what to do in the meantime, depending on the type of emergency that you are dealing with. If you have had a tooth knocked out, rinse it with water and try to put it back in place, being careful to hold it by the crown rather than the root. If it won’t fit back in the socket, place the tooth in some milk or water while you transport it to your dental appointment. If you have lost a filling, you can place a piece of sugar-free gum in its place to close the cavity as a temporary measure. In the case of a lost crown, be sure to keep the crown safe until you can get to the dentist. If you experience pain and discomfort, you can take some over-the-counter medications to provide pain relief until you can see your dentist for treatment.
