Gentle and Effective Root Canal Treatments

Understanding the importance of preserving natural teeth, root canal treatments offered at our Sydney CBD practice address infections in the tooth’s nerve tissue without the need for extraction.

What Is a Root Canal Treatment?

Traditionally if the nerve tissue of a tooth became infected the whole tooth would have to be extracted. A root canal treatment addresses this issue by simply removing the infected nerve tissue, therefore saving the natural tooth from extraction.

What Causes Root Canals?

Your tooth can get infected via tooth decay, a dental injury that has gone untreated, or periodontal disease. The tooth is made up of three main layers which include:

  1. The Enamel: This is the outer protective layer of your tooth and is made up of one of the hardest materials in the human body; however, it is not immune to damage. With poor oral health habits tooth decay can erode the enamel and reach the inner layers of the tooth.
  2. The Dentine: This is the softer middle layer that is vital to support the structure of the enamel.
  3. The Pulp: This is the softest layer of your tooth and is made up of blood vessels and nerves. This is what can become infected, and if not treated, the infection may move down the tooth root to the jaw.

To prevent infection in the tooth moving down to the jaw (which can cause much pain and discomfort), we use root canal treatments to remove the infected tissue and restore health to the tooth. The only other alternative is to extract the tooth to remove the risk of further infection.

Will my root canal treatment hurt?

Contrary to popular belief, root canal therapy should not cause any more discomfort than that of a normal dental filling procedure as it is performed under local anaesthetic to minimise any sensations of pain. Our dentists take extra care during more invasive treatments to ensure your comfort, especially for anxious patients. With a strong focus on gentle dentistry, we go above and beyond to make your experience with us as smooth, easy and painless as possible.
