Traditionally a material called amalgam was used in dental fillings.
Compared to the modern filling material we use in our Sydney CBD dental practice, amalgam is an unsightly and potentially unhealthy filling option.
Disadvantages of amalgam fillings:
1) Amalgam is not environmentally friendly:
Amalgam is comprised of an alloy containing around 50% mercury. There has been some debate over whether mercury vapour can be released into your mouth whilst chewing. Regardless of this, amalgam poses an environmental threat therefore we do not use amalgam fillings in our practice and instead opt for ‘metal-free dentistry’.
2) Amalgam expands and contracts in response to temperature changes:
Unlike our natural tooth material, amalgam expands and contracts in response to the temperature of the food and beverages we consume. This can cause fillings to crack your natural tooth structure and become loose.
3) Amalgam fillings are not attractive:
Amalgam fillings are not aesthetically pleasing as they are a dark metallic colour and can actually stain the colour of the natural tooth structure that surrounds it. This detracts from the seamless result desired by many patients.
4) Amalgam fillings can damage your teeth:
Although amalgam fillings themselves are highly durable, over time with repeated pressure from chewing they can actually cause your tooth to crack!
5) Amalgam fillings can harbour decay causing agents:
Unlike modern filling techniques amalgam fillings do not form a complete seal with your natural tooth (they are simply packed into the void) and as such decay can continue to occur underneath the filling.
At Hyde Park Dental Care we proudly use mercury free filling materials.
Our tooth coloured filling material is completely safe and does not pose a hazard to the environment. Another great aspect about this material is that it does not expand or contract in response to temperature changes within the mouth. At our Sydney CBD dental practice we believe in providing the utmost care and convenience for our patients and this includes their long-term oral health goals. By using tooth coloured fillings we can ensure your tooth is sealed properly, which means there is a greater chance of preventing further damage or decay.
Like the name suggests, our tooth coloured filling material can be matched to the exact colour of your natural tooth. This creates a functional and seamless result for a restoration that is aesthetically pleasing and effective.
